It is situated between the towns of Darlington and Richmond, close to Scotch Corner and the remains of the Roman fort and bridge at Piercebridge. ==Nomenclature== The name 'Stanwick' is thought to be derived from the Old Norse word 'steinvegges', meaning "stone ways".
